Riots, arson and looting have seriously harmed many of our shopping centres - the damage and destruction has been to places of vital importance to local economies and communities. Planning has a vital part to play in the aftermath of the riots to help businesses get back on their feet.
It is at times like this that the planning system can really show what it is capable of, to do its bit in helping to get businesses back up and running again. A fast, effective and prioritised service must be provided to those in need.
NLP has today written to Ministers recommending some specific day to day planning matters to help put businesses back on their feet:
- planning officers to use discretion at this time as to what repair work needs permission;
- Council planning resources earmarked to advise owners what consents may be needed;
- clear pre-application advice to expedite re - development and refurbishment;
- a temporary cessation in these circumstances of any pre application fees.
