John Cottrell, Director at NLP's Cardiff office, provided an insight into the viability challenges for housing in Wales at the recent RICS Wales Housing Conference 2012.
Other speakers at the conference included, Huw Lewis (Assembly Member and Welsh Government Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage) and Jane Carpenter (Planning Director, Redrow Homes).
John outlined some of the techniques that NLP has employed, such as HEaDROOM and eVALUATE, to help ensure viability is included as part of the planning balance and forms an integral part of the decision-making process. John argued that the rationale for planning should be driving economic growth rather than acting as an obstacle, stifling development.
This was a great opportunity to share NLP's experiences of viability assessment with RICS professionals and to discuss some of the challenges of delivering housing growth in the current economic climate.
