Castletown is going through a period of significant change, a large area of old and failing former colliery housing is being regenerated by the council.
An extensive baseline and site appraisal was carried out alongside a comprehensive community engagement programme. Ideas and projects were developed with the community and stakeholders in the area, with a range of options developed to inform the final masterplan.
Housing renewal is a significant component of the masterplan, alongside neighbourhood management initiatives to help tackle some of the socio economic problems in the area.
The Castletown Masterplan was approved by the City Council as an Interim Supplementary Planning Document.
The key elements of the masterplan are:
- the development of about 150 new family homes
- a six-bedroom children's hospice for the Grace House
- the retention and improvement and part redevelopment of commercial properties
- improvements to the appearance of the entrances, or gateways, to Castletown with landscaping and improved signing
- the introduction of traffic calming measures measures to improve community safety and access to facilities.
