The new HQ offices will provide an anchor for redevelopment to take place across the rest of The Co-operative Group’s estate and surrounding area to the north of the city centre in the future. The new building will achieve an ‘outstanding’ BREEAM rating and will be one of the most environmentally sustainable buildings in Europe. Renewable measures include a biomass boiler, ground source heat pump and photovoltaic panels.
A single building form was required by the client and the proposed design ensures a continuity of public realm, a positive response to the level change, strong relationship with listed building nearby and a landmark building on Manchester skyline.
NLP co-ordinated the Environmental Statement (ES) for the HQ, as well as having advised on a number of other potential sites in the early phase of the project. NLP prepared the cultural heritage, socio-economic and visual impact chapters of the ES.
