Former Cape Asbestos Site, County Durham

Identifying a Solution

Following NLP advice on the planning strategy, we prepared an outline planning application for a viable redevelopment scheme comprising up to 250 dwellings and circa 10,000 sq m of employment floorspace.
While the application was initially refused, planning permission was granted on appeal by the Secretary of State. NLP presented expert planning evidence to the 4-day Public Inquiry.

Delivery

The initial phase of the scheme is being developed by Dunelm Homes to provide 80 new homes including low-energy Climat-Hus properties. 50 of the homes are affordable, managed by Riverside North East and The Durham Aged Mineworkers Homes Association. A further tranche of the site has recently been acquired by a major national housebuilder.
